Suturing Flashcards
Sutures
used to close wounds to skin or other tissue
Absorbable material
enzymes in the body in the tissue naturally digest them, you don’t need to remove them (for the inside of the body)
Nonabsorbable material
used for skin (exterior wounds), needs to be removed at a later date
Monofilament
consist of a single thread, this allows you to suture through tissues
Braided
consists of several small threads braided together, more secure but increased risk for infection
Tapered needles
Sharp at the point
Used on vascular tissues and internal organs to prevent bleeding
Cutting needles
Sharp along the whole edge of the needle (like a knife)
Used on skin and very tough tissues (bone and tendon)
Uninterrupted technique
used for larger wounds where tension is required to keep the world shut
Interrupted
used for wounds where minimal tension is required. Good aesthetic outcome
What makes a good stitch
1.Equal distance from each side (from the wound)
2.90 degrees
3.Long tail (2cm)
4.Same spacing from one stitch to the next
5.Knots on same side
