Addiction
Addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disorder that results in compulsive use of a substance or behavior that continues despite negative consequences.
Chemical addiction
This refers to addiction that involves the use of substances.
- Alcohol, nicotine, opioids, stimulants, depressants, marijuana
Behavioral addiction
This refers to addiction that involves compulsive behaviors.
These are persistent, repeated behaviors that you carry out even if they don’t offer any real benefit.
Why are kids more vulnerable to addiction
90% of addictions start in adolescence or young adulthood because the developing brain is more vulnerable.
Specifically, the prefrontal cortex is not fully developed.
Dopamine
The way the brain signals pleasure is through the release of a neurotransmitter called dopamine into the brain’s pleasure center
Tolerance
The brain adapts to the effects of the drug so dopamine has less impact. and they have to take greater amounts of the drug more frequently to feel high.
Opioids
Opioid drugs are derived from the poppy plant. The milky white substance extracted from seed capsule can relieve pain
