Sutra (general) Flashcards
Who created the aural setting for Sutra?
Szymon Broska - a polish composer
How is the aural setting of Sutra different to conventional types of music in dance?
The music is altered to fit the monks pace, with the orchestra following the monks instead of the traditional approach of dancers following the orchestra.
Why was the music performed the way it was?
Broska wanted to reflect both the stillness of the monks and their strong physicality. Similarly, Larbi, inspired by Tanztheatre and the abstract and multidisciplinary approach of modern dance, wanted the movement to be the primary focus of the work.
What is typical for Broska’s work?
His work typically reflects the synergy between the music, movement and image conveyed
Who designed the costumes?
The Abbot, Larbi and Wardrobe manager Leila Ransley
Who designed the boxes?
Antony Gormley
What is the design of the boxes?
16 six-foot-long, open topped wooden boxes
What are the influences on Cherkaoui and Sutra?
- Post-structuralism/conceptual art
- Post modern dance
- Inclusive Theatre
- Feminism
- Anthony Gormley, drawing
- Pop culture
- Multiculturalism
In Post-modern dance, who influenced Larbi and how?
- Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker; developed highly pedestrianised and repetitive movements, and work without narrative, that were timed through pattern and accumulation
- Pina Bausch + Tanztheatre; elaborate sets where performers spoke and performed repetitive yet symbolic gestures. Bausch blurred the boundaries between dance and theatre in order to provoke the audiences emotions
- works increasingly multi-disciplinary + abstract in aesthetic with pure movement being the primary focus
How did Feminism influence Larbi and Sutra?
- Bausch’s address of social influences within her work
- 1970s/80s second wave of feminism
- Tanztheatre Wuppertal explored gender politics through her choreo
- Cherkaoui said that Bausch’s works reminded him of his parents who separated when he was a teenager - Larbi never felt love was real in stories like Romeo and Juliet.
How did Post-Structuralism/conceptual art influence Cherkaoui? What does it mean?
THE WAY YOU LOOK, INTERACT WITH, PORTRAY AND PERCEIVE OBJECTS
- boxes are plinths, the a prison, then a necropolis, then a trap door to another worlds then dominoes
How does drawing influence Cherkaoui?
- views movement and drawing as interconnected
- sees them as the same art form
- argues that there is an architecture in dance
How did Wim Vandekeybus influence Larbi?
He used animal like movement quality through tension, conflict, impulses, physicality and instinct.
Who was Alain Platel and what was his influence on Larbi?
He was Larbi’s first professional mentor. He is known for ‘radical dance theatre’, Les Ballets C. de la B. and improvisation. He did not, however, influence Larbi’s style. Larbi joined the company in 1997 and made two works for the company.
What are Larbi’s stylistic features?
- hyper-flexible, almost contortionist movement
- uses a diverse range of performers from a range of ages, abilities and genres
- elastic and fluid dynamics - movements start where another ends creating flow
- mirroring
- folding and unfolding
- utilises gravity as a means to transfer weight around the space and from different levels
- fuses multiple styles together
- precise footwork and placement inspired by yoga and martial arts
- portrays social and human issues
