Sustainable management Flashcards
Where is the Amazon rainforest
Northern south America
How big is the Amazon rainforest
8 million square kilometres
What is governance
The control of the rainforest and who decides how it is used
What is the CACC
Central Amazon Conservation Complex
protected area of rainforest in Brazil
Classified as a world heritage site by the UN meaning international treaties help to protect it by limiting hunting, logging, fishing and who has access to the area
How big is the CACC
60,000 square kilometres
What is Natutama
An NGO working in Ecuador
What does Natutama do
Helps local communities to protect river species such as the Amazon river dolphin.
Employs locals to educate others on how to protect habitants and local species
Local fisherman collect data of species population and distribution and report illegal hunting
What is commodity value
When different value are given to goods and services in the rainforest like gold and timber so the rainforest habitat and ecosystem as a whole is more valuable than the individual resources
What is selective logging
When only a small number of trees are felled so the forest can naturally regenerate
Companies in the long run have more profit as the do not need to pay to replant felled trees
What is an example of a sustainable wood company and what does it do
Precious woods amazon
It limits the number of trees being cut down so the rainforest can regrow
Uses a variety of trees so species are not over-exploited
What company certifies sustainable forestry
Forestry stewardship council allows companies which operate in a sustainable way to use their logo on products so consumers know they are buying sustainable products
What is eco-tourism
A type of tourism which minimises environmental damage and supports local people
What is an example of eco-tourism and what does it do
Yachana lodge in Ecuador
Provides jobs for local people giving them a stable income and improved quality of life
Locals are encouraged to use the rainforest sustainably so tourists continue to visit
Only allows small groups to minimise damage
Volunteers work with the local youth at Yachana technical high school to educate them on sustainable agriculture, animal husbandry, micro-enterprise development, renewable energy, rainforest conservation and eco-tourism
Tourists participate in activities to raise awareness of conservation issues
Guests pay entrance fee which go towards education and conservation projects
