Ecology Flashcards
What is the main factor affecting biome
Latitude as the angle of the sun is perpendicular at the equator so the sun is concentrated over a small area as you get further away from the equator the angle gets larger so the same amount of un is spread over a larger area making it cooler
What is atmospheric circulation
The movement of air around the globe to try and balance the temperature
What is the tri-cellular model
Hadley cell - around the equator air moves anti-clockwise rise at the equator and falling at around 30 degrees
Ferrell cell - around 30-60 degrees air moves in a clockwise direction rising at 60 degrees and falling at 30 degrees
Polar cell - around 60-90 degrees air moves in an anti-clockwise rising at around 60 degrees and falling at around 90 degrees
Why does altitude determine temperature
As altitude increases the air becomes less dense so it can retain less heat 100m reduces temperature by 1 degree celcius
