Resource management Flashcards
Causes of lack of access to clean water
In hot season water in wells dries up
Climate change is causing more water source to dry up
Unsuitable toilets do not treat or manage human waste
Open water sources shred with animals become contaminate
Children may have to walk far to get to water
Effects of lack of access to clean water
missing school from illness from contaminated water or from having to walk long distances to access water
People cant focus on earning a living if they don’t have water or are ill
Biodiversity loss
How has Paraguay solved water problems
Sanitation and water agency placed within public health department so it was treated as a public health issue
Recognised in law that access to sufficient and quality water is a human right
Ambitious targets were set for the provision of piped water in rural and urban areas
Water sanitation boards run by volunteers set up in small communities who set tariffs ($3-5 a month) to cover maintenance and operation costs while also repaying the government for the initial infrastructure. Boards are trained in operation and maintenance of the water systems and get technical assistance to make the scheme more sustainable
world bank has loaned over $150 million to finance the project
What is palm oil
An edible vegetable oil which comes from the fruit of the palm tree
What is palm oil in
Close to 50% of all packaged products found in supermarkets including pizza, shampoo, lipstick and animal feed
What is the problem with palm oil
Is a major driver of deforestation as large sections of the rainforest is cleared to make room for plantations this destroys the habitat of already endangered species like the orangutan, pygmy elephant and the Sumatran rhino
Between 1000 and 5000 orangutans are killed because of palm oil every year
Conversion of the carbon rich peat soil release large amount of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere
Exploitation of workers and child labour
Over the past 20 years 8 million acres of of vital forests have been lost to palm oil deforestation
Solutions to palm oil
The round table on sustainable palm oil (RSPO) formed in 2004 in response to concerns on environment and social impact of palm oil
It sets policies to remove deforestation, prevent further destruction of ecosystems and prevent human rights abuses
Certifies products where growers help to protect the environment and local communities who depend on the crop for their livelihood
