shoreline management plan(SMP)
A
- for each sediment cell in the UK, an SMP has been created to help with the coastline management
- their aim is to plan for short and longterm

4 options for an SMP
A
HOLD THE LINE= maintain the existing coastal defences
MANAGED RETREAT/REALIGNMENT= allow the shoreline to move but manage the retreat so it causes less damage
DO NOTHING= build no coastal defences at and leave erosion
ADVANCE THE LINE= build new coastal defences further out to sea than the existing line of defence

factors which are considered when choosing a management plan
A
- economic value of assets they could protect like gas reserves
- the ecological and cultural value of the land

integrated coastal zone management=
A
where large areas of the coastline are managed with one integrated strategy
- it considers all elements of the coastal system (water, land, people and economy)
- it recognises the importance of the coast for peoples livelihoods
- ICZM involves all stake holders
- its a dynamic strategy-decisions are made by re-evaluating if the environment changes
