Q

carbon capture and storage

A
  • it can capture up to 90% of co2 emissions produced by fossil fuels
  • catpuring the co2 can help seperate the co2 from gases produced in electricity
  • transporting the co2 by pipelines or ship

Q

changes in rural land use

A

-GRASSLANDS- these offer a global green house gas mitigation potential as carbon could be sequestered into soil. these can be improved by:
avoid overstocking grazing animals, irrigation can improve plant productivity
-CROPLANDS- helps increase soil organic carbon this can be done by:
reducing ploughing-avoid the accelerated decomposition of organic matter
-rotation of cash crops to help increase biomass returned to soil
-FORESTED LAND AND TREE CROPS=forests are able to reduce co2 emissions to the atmosphere by storing lots of carbon
-reforesting degraded land increases biomass density so increases carbon density

Q

improved aviation practices

A
  • in 2013 the aviation industry produced 705 million tonnes of carbon
possible solutions to reduce co2 emissions:
    100% occupancy of seats
    increased engine efficiancy
    carbon capture within engines
    avoid circling and queuing

Q

regional and national strategies

A
  • governments can invest in carbon capture and storage
  • uks target is to reduce GHG emissions by 80% by 2050
  • afforestation and restoring degraded forests can increase carbon uptake

Q

global scale

A
  • Paris climate deals-aims to limit increase of global temps to 2degree above pre industrial levels, they meet every 5 years
  • international carbon trading schemes- countries and businesses are given a limit on the emissions they can produce
  • if they produce less they can sell their extra credits if they produce more they need to buy more credits
