sediment cells Flashcards
sediment cell=
they are regarded as a closed system where nothing is gained or lost but fine material does get transferred to neighbouring cells
sediment sources=
RIVERS-most sediment is from the rivers as its transported by waves, tides and currents
CLIFF EROSION-very important in areas with unconsolidated cliffs which erode easily
WIND- causes sand to be blown along or up a beach
OFFSHORE SAND BANKS-sediment eroded and transported along the beach
sediment budget=
the balance between sediment being added to and removed from the coastal system
they can be used to identify the sources that deliver sediment to the cell and to the sites where sediment is stored
positive and negative sediment budgets
more sediment being added than removed=a positive budget so shorelines build up
more material being removed from the cell=a negative budget so the shoreline retreats landwards
