Sustainability
The ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations.
Reduction (waste)
Reducing the amount of packaging for products.
Energy recovery
Waste can be converted into energy, the main method this is done by is incineration.
Composting
Organic waste can be used to make compost to fertilise gardens or farmland
Anaerobic digestion
Large scale composting taking place in an enclosed reactor.
Produces biogas which can be used for an energy supply. Expensive to set up.
Landfill
Dumping waste is old quarries or hollows. Leaching can be a byproduct as can the release of methane gas
Pay as you throw schemes
Schemes in which the more waste a household throws out, the more they are charged
Suburb
An outlying district of a city, especially a residential one
The brown agenda
The range of environmental problems experienced by cities in the developing world
