SUSTAINABILITY Flashcards
What is sustainability?
Use and management of resources that allow full natural replacement of the resources exploited and full recovery of the ecosystems affected by their extraction.
Sustainable Development: The ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
How can we measure sustainability?
Through measuring our ecological footprint
What is the ecological footprint?
The ecological footprint is a tool used to measure how fast humans generate waste and consume ecological resources compared to how fast earth is able to regenerate those resources and absorb waste.
Factors that the Ecological Footprint measures
- Carbon Uptake
- Forest
- Grazing Land
- Cropland
- Fishing Grounds
- Built up Land
How is the EF measured?
In Global Hectares
What is Biocapacity?
It is the ecosystem’s ability to produce biological materials and absorb the waste generated by humans.
What is a Biocapacity Reserve?
It is when the Biocapacity exceeds the Ecological Footprint
What is a Biocapacity Deficit?
When the Ecological Footprint exceeds the Biocapacity.
What is Earthovershoot day?
Earthovershoot day marks the date when human’s demand for ecological services and resources exceeds what earth can regenerate.
