Sustainability Flashcards
Name the 6R’s
Repair, Re-use, Recycle, Rethink, Reduce, Refuse
Repair
It’s better to fix things instead of throwing things away
Re-use
People can extend a product’s life by passing it on or re-use parts or all of it to make something else
Recycle
You can reprocess a material or product to make something else
Rethink
Designers can think about whether the product can be made in a different way and design in a way that considers people and the environment
Reduce
Long-lasting, durable products mean less and material and energy is used
Refuse
Designers should refuse to design in a way that is damaging to the environment and people can refuse to buy products that seem wasteful
Questions to ask in sustainability analysis
Could fewer raw materials have been used?
Could the energy used to produce or transport the product be reduced?
Can the materials be easily recycled?
Does the product use any recycled materials?
Does the product require an energy source?
Is there any toxic or hazardous waste from the product or its manufacture?
