Q

What is the Indian surveillance system?

A

Centralised Monitoring System - gives the authorities sweeping access to citizens’ phone calls and internet communications in the name of national security. No law exists which mandates or regulates the CMS. This mass surveillance system is merely regulated under section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act 1885 which empowers the Indian government to intercept communications on the occurrence of any public emergency or in the interest of public safety.
