synoptic surveillance

the effect of surveillance
explain foucaults view of surveillance
Panopticon is a model of how power operates in society as a whole
if prisoners do not know if they’re being watched but they might be they have to behave at all times - self surveillance
controls society
Synoptic surveillance
foucault only tells half the story
panopticon allows the few to monitor the menu and the other media allows the many to see the few
believe in synopticon - everyone watches everyone e.g. dash cams
Explain liquid surveillance
todays world surveillance is liquid
HOW:
travellers - passport controls
Consumers - loyalty cards
Social media - exchange personal info
surveillance acts as a big brother - watched but don’t know when so behave
Explain the effect of surveillance
People think we are being watched - controls their behaviour
e.g. car park cameras + location finding software in phones
prevent us from committing crime
Todays world is post panoptical - everyone monitoring what we do
