crime is caused by biological and social factors

The nuclear family is undermined by the welfare state - providing a perverse incentive
people on welfare form an underclass who fail to socialise their children properly
What is rational choice theory?
people are rational beings with free will
committing crime is a choice based on a calculation of consequences and reward
little risk = high crime rate
what is zero tolerance policing?
police crack down on minor deviance so community know law is taken seriously
What is broken windows?
any sign of deterioration must be dealt with immediately and not tolerated to show they cannot get away with it
What is target hardening?
increasing the cost of committing crime so people do not - e.g. CCTV
