Explanations of green crime Flashcards
What are the explanations of green crime
1.transgressive approach- White
2.the Anthropocentric approach
3.Global risk society and the environment- Beck
What is transgressive criminology (simple definition)
any harm to humans or the environment is a crime
What does anthropocentric mean
Human centred
What is white’s (transgressive) approach
traditional criminology is outdated
any action that causes harm should be studied
a lot of harm done to the environment is not illegal e.g. deforestation
green criminology is therefore a form of transgressive criminology
what is the anthropocentric approach
Humans have the right to dominate nature - economic growth >environment
TNCs + states take this approach
what view do green criminologists take (within anthropocentric approach)
ecocentric view - environmental harm hurts humans + both are liable to exploitation by global capitalism
building of airports factories and motorways from green spaces is a green crime
What does Beck believe
threats to human well-being + ecosystem are human made
in late modern society increase in productivity has lead to new manufactured risks on a global scale
example of the global risk society
fresh fruit and veg in UK all year due to overfarming in poorer hotter countries - more risk in society as this is destroying planet
tech aiding this cars + emissions - air pollution
