Who was Antoni Depage and why was he significant?

A

He was a Belgian doctor, that improved the treatment of wounds via the process of delayed primary closure

FIRST: thoroughly explored objects (shrapnel) from clothing. Then he washed the wound with antiseptics to prevent infection

SECOND: left wound in air for 24 -48 hours. Next looked at a swab of wound under a microscope to check bacteria.
Then proceeded close the wound up if it wasn’t infected

This method saved soldiers from undergoing painful amputation which increased mortality rate

How were X-rays used during the war?

A

They were used to find broken bones.
The British had 528 X-rays and 14 mobile units(helped by marie curie) to tear men closer at the front line

What was the Thomas splints importance during the war?

A

Thomas splint utilised by Robert jones to treat fractured femur by strapping it around a broken bone, before the casualty was moved. Protected it from more damage.

This reduced the broken limbs from 80% to 20%

What were blood transfusions?

A

They were used to transfer blood from one person to another, to treat them from a loos of blood. Used by British doctors
( 1917) captain Oswald Roberson suggested to collect blood before it was needed. That resulted in the first blood bank to be set up in preparation for the battle of Cambria(froze anti-coagulant and sodium citrate with it)
