What is a meconium ileus?
A blockage of the intestine due to meconium becoming stuck within the lumen.
What is a common sign of an obstruction on X-ray?
Soap bubble
Laddering
What is jejunal atresia?
The jejunum is a dead end.
How doe jejunal atresia usually present?
Early onset vomiting and a large distended belly
Why do you get very limited movement of the bowels in jejunal atresia?
The bowel below the atresia is still functioning so secretes some fluid that will show up on X-ray and can be passed.
What is malrotation?
The bowel twists around the mesentery cutting of the blood supply.
Why should malrotation be treated as a medical emergency?
Because the bowel can become necrotic and in a young baby this is incompatible with life?
What s the first step in a suspected malrotation?
An upper GI contrast X ray
What is a clinical sign of a malrotation?
Green bilious vomiting
