Surface Anatomy And The Skull Flashcards
What are the 4 main bones in the skull that contain air spaces
Maxilla (containing the largest sinus)
Ethmoid (contains a lot of small sinuses)
Frontal
Sphenoid
What are air spaces called
Sinuses
What is ankyloglossia
A shortened lingual frenulum
Exhibited by 4-11% of new borns
What is the inverted V shaped boundary separating the anterior 2/3 and posterior 1/3 of the tongue called
The sulcus terminalis
What are the names of the 3 main foramen in the hard palate
The incisive foramen (maxilla)
The greater palatine foramen (between the maxilla and the palatine bone)
Lesser palatine foramen (palatine bone)
Where are the 3 pulse points in the neck
Temporal pulse
Facial pulse
Carotid pulse
What clinical condition is associated with damages motor branches in the face?
Bell’s palsy
What is bell’s palsy?
It is when the motor branches of the facial nerve stop working properly and the muscles of facial expression on that side become paralysed
What caused Bell’s palsy?
Bell’s is usually caused by a virus which causes inflammation of the facial nerve while it is still travelling through the temporal bone
What does the trigeminal nerve have?
A large ganglion located inside the cranial cavity just inferior to the bran
Which nerve and division of this nerve are the upper teeth supplied by?
The Maxillary (V2) nerve division of cranial nerve V (the trigeminal nerve)
Which nerve and division of this nerve are the lower teeth supplied by?
The Mandibular (V2) nerve division of cranial nerve V (the trigeminal nerve)
Which nerve and division of this nerve is the skin supplied by?
Is supplied by all the divisions of the trigeminal nerve
What lies anterior to the sulcus terminals in the tongue?
Circumvallate papillae
What muscle divides the neck into anterior and posterior triangles?
Sternocleidomastoid muscle
