Suppression Of Enemy Air Defense Flashcards
Activity that neutralizes, destroys, or temporarily degrades surface-based enemy air defenses by destructive and / or disruptive means
SEAD
Degree of dominance in the air battle by one force that permits the conduct of its operations at a given time and place without prohibitive interference from air and missile threats
Air superiority
What are the three categories of SEAD?
• Area of responsibility (AOR) / joint operations area (JOA)-wide air defense (AD) system suppression
• Localized suppression
• Opportune suppression
Categories of SEAD:
Conducted against specific enemy AD systems throughout the AOR/JOA to degrade or destroy their major capabilities / effectiveness. Immediate objective is to destroy or disrupt the enemy’s integrated air defense system. Primary high payoff targets include: C2 nodes & early warning RADARs. JFACC normally responsible for planning & Coordinating.
Area of responsibility (AOR) / joint operations area (JOA)-wide air defense (AD) system suppression
Categories of SEAD:
Operations that are normally confined to geographic areas associated with specific targets or transit routes for a specific time. Consists of SEAD aircraft escorting other aircraft.
Localized Suppression
Categories of SEAD:
Unplanned. Includes aircrew self-defense and attack against surface-air defense targets of opportunity. Continuous operation involving immediate response to acquired targets of opportunity. Includes: Aircrew Self-defense, targets of opportunity, targets acquired by observers or controllers, targets acquired by aircrews.
Opportune Suppression
Identify the two means of accomplishing SEAD?
Destructive means
Disruptive means
What is the technique for dealing with SEAD?
Avoid, Suppress, Kill (ASK)
Means of SEAD:
Seek the destruction of the target system or operating personnel.
o Big demand on assets / air space
o Cumulative effects
Destructive means
Means of SEAD:
Temporarily deny, degrade, deceive, delay, or neutralize enemy surface AD systems.
o Disruptive means may be either active or passive
1- Active: Electronic attack or tactics: deception, avoidance, evasive flight profiles.
2- Passive: Emission control, camouflage, infrared shielding, warning receivers, material design features.
Technique: Avoid, suppress, Kill (ASK)
Disruptive means
Two types of disruptive means of SEAD?
Active or Passive
Disruptive means of SEAD:
Electronic attack or tactics: deception, avoidance, evasive flight profiles.
Active
Disruptive means of SEAD:
Emission control, camouflage, infrared shielding, warning receivers, material design features.
Passive
What is the purpose of SEAD planning in MDMP
Dominate the EMS & penetrate airspace
_____ is inherent to SEAD planning
EW

Range of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation from zero to infinity. It is divided into 26 alphabetically designated bands.
Electromagnetic spectrum (EMS)
Offensive operations to destroy, disrupt, or neutralize enemy aircraft, missiles, launch platforms, and their supporting structures and systems both before and after launch, and as close to their source possible.
Offensive Counterair (OCA)
