Battlefield Intelligence Flashcards
The “PRODUCT” resulting from the collection, processing, integration, evaluation, analysis, and interpretation of available information concerning
Intelligence
The systematic “OBSERVATION” of aerospace, surface, or subsurface areas, places, persons, or things, by visual, aural, electronic, photographic, or other means. (MQ-1)
Surveillance
A “MISSION” undertaken to obtain, by visual observation or other detection methods, information about the activities and resources of an enemy or adversary, or to secure data concerning the meteorological, hydrographic, or geographic characteristics of a particular area. (RQ-4)
Reconnaissance
Name 3 intelligence disciplines
Human intelligence (HUMINT)
Geospatial intelligence (GEOINT)
Signals Intelligence (SIGINT)
HUMINT ADVANTAGES:
Enemy intentions, plans, doctrine, leadership, morale.
HUMINT DISADVANTAGES:
Non consistently available in all areas, not very timely, Reliability of foreign sources problematic
Geospatial Intelligence Advantages:
Provides enemy location and movement, ideal for early warning, accurate for map preparation, near-real-time capabilities
Geospatial Intelligence Disadvantages:
Dependent on light and weather, radar systems are active emitters, Tactical GEOINT not always real-time, Limited number of sources and platforms
Signals Intelligence Advantages:
Rapid equipment identification and geolocation, excellent source of enemy order-of-battle (OB)
Signals Intelligence Disadvantages:
Susceptible to deception, must have line of sight, resource intensive, generally limited distribution.
Specific questions addressed to unit S2
• Primary tool to task intelligence community
Requests for information
Determine Critical elements of the requests for information (RFI)
• Latest time information is of value (LTIOV)
• Location
• The question
Determine types of intelligence collection assets and associated products
1) Satellites: Wide spectrum of intelligence and reconnaissance functions including: GEOINT, SIGINT, Early warning of ballistic missile launch.
2) Aircraft: U-2S Dragon Lady (GEOINT / SIGINT), RC-135 Rivet Joint (SIGINT), RC-12 Guardrail (SIGINT), E-8 JSTARS (GEOINT)
3) Unmanned Aircraft Systems: Raven, Shadow, MQ-1 Predator, MQ-1C Grey Eagle, RQ-4 Global Hawk, MQ-9 Reaper
4) Ground-Based Sensor: Prophet (Ground based electronic support and electronic attack)
5) Service Members (Human Intelligence): In-flight report, Spot report, Scouts, SOF Special reconnaissance missions
