Supporting Structures Flashcards
Describe the joint capsule of talocrural joint
- Fibrous capsule lined with synovial membrane
- Surrounds articular margins
Describe the medial (deltoid) collateral ligament of the talocrural joint
> From medial malleolus to:
Deep bands: all medial border of talus (ant + post tibiotalar)
Superficial bands: Sustentaculum tali (tibiocalcaneal)
: Navicular tuberosity (tibionavicular)
Prevents unwanted eversion + abduction
Describe the Lateral collateral ligament complex of the talocrural joint
ATFL
- Anterior inferior tip of fibula apex to lateral head of talus
- usually first to break in inversion injury
PTFL
- Post inferior fibula apex to posterior body of talus
CFL
- inferior fibula apex to lateral aspect of calcaneus
> All prevent unwanted inversion and adduction
Describe the capsule and ligaments of the subtalar joint
> weak articular capsule attaching to the joint margins and the floor/roof of tarsal sinus (meets talocalcaneonavicular joint capsule forming talocalcaneal ligament)
Ligaments
- Medial talocalcaneal - med post talus to sustentaculum tali
- Posterior Talocalcaneal - posterior talus to upper medial calcaneus
Lateral talocalcaneal (deep to CFL) - Posterior talus to Lateral calcaneus
Describe the capsule and ligaments of the mid-tarsal joint
> Capsule: Shared with anterior articulations of talocalcaneal joint - merges with subtalar capsule in tarsal sinus to form interosseous talocalcaneal ligament
Ligaments:
Dorsal talonavicular - sup. head of talus to sup. proximal navicular
Bifurcate ligament - Sup. distal calcaneus to sup navicular and sup cuboid
Plantar Calcaneocuboid: Short plantar ligament
From calcaneal tubercle (plantar aspect) to plantar aspect of cuboid
Plantar Calcaneonavicular: Spring ligament
from sustentaculum tali to plantar aspect of navicular tuberosity
Long plantar ligament: plantar calcaneus to plantar cuboid + bases of lateral 4 metatarsals
Intertarsal joints
> Enclosed within either subtalar or mid-tarsal joint capsules
Reinforced by dorsal, plantar and interosseous ligaments
Tarsometatarsal joints (lisfranc) + intermetatarsal joints
> joint capsule attaches to articular margins
reinforced by plantar, dorsal and interosseous cuneometatarsal ligaments
*intermetatarsal joints are reinforced by interosseous ligaments
Metatarsophalangeal joints
> joint capsule attaches to articular margins
reinforced by plantar (on base) and collateral (on sides) ligaments
deep transverse metatarsal ligaments unite the plantar ligaments between toes
Interphalangeal joints
> joint capsule around articular margins
> collateral and plantar ligaments
