Supporting Structures Flashcards
Describe the Hip capsule and attachment sites
- Thick and fibrous (outer = fibrous, inner = synovial)
- Surrounds the acetabulum, labrum and transverse
ligament - Attaches above the base of the neck of the femur (ant to intertrochanteric line, post = neck above intertrochanteric crest).
Name the ligaments of the hip
- Iliofemoral ligament
- Ischiofemoral ligament
- Pubofemoral ligament
- Ligamentum teres
(Inguinal ligament - not true ligament = doesn’t cross joint)
(Transverse ligament completes the labrum and allows nutrient vessel access to ligamentum teres)
State the attachments and function of Iliofemoral ligament.
Apex: AIIS
Base: Intertrochanteric line
Limits: Sup/Lat: Extension + Adduction
: Inf/Med: Extension + Abduction
State the attachments and function of the Pubofemoral ligament.
Apex: Pubic eminence Base: Capsule : Intertrochanteric line : Inf/Med band of iliofemoral ligament. Limits: Extension : Abduction
State the attachments and function of the Ischiofemoral ligament.
Apex: Inferior aspect of ischium Base: Capsule : Anterior part of greater trochanter (deep to iliofemoral ligament) Limits: Extension : Medial Rotation
State the attachments and function of the Ligamentum teres.
Apex: Fovea Capitis of head of femur
Base: Acetabular Notch and Transverse Ligament
Limits: Any extreme movement
State the factors that contribute to hip joint stability.
- Cup shaped acetabulum
- Deepened by acetabular labrum
- Vacuum effect of ball in socket
- Oblique angle of femoral shaft
- Strong Capsule
- Strong Ligaments
- Powerful surrounding muscles
State the attachments of the Inguinal Ligament and the body space to which it forms the superior border.
Connects the ASIS to the ipsilateral pubic tubercle.
It forms the superior border of the femoral triangle.
