Q

Describe the blood supply to the hip joint

A
  • Medial and lateral circumflex arteries (branches of deep femoral artery) which join through joint capsule to supply the femoral neck and hip joint
  • Artery of femoral head - within the ligamentum teres
  • Nutrient arteries within femoral shaft

Q

Describe the Nerve supply to the hip joint

A

Comes mainly form obturator/sciatic/femoral nerves which also innervate the knee (referred pain)

Q

Name the main bursae of the hip and where they lie

A
  • Greater trochanteric bursa - prevents friction between ITB and greater trochanter
  • Iliopsoas Bursa - prevents friction between iliopsoas and anterior hip capsule.

Q

Describe the ITB and Fascia around the hip.

A
  1. ITB = thick band of fascia that runs down the lateral side of the leg - ASIS to gerdys tubercle
    - helps to stabilize the knee
  2. Fascia Lata - deep fascia of the thigh - encloses thigh muscles (ITB = thickening of this)
  3. Intermuscular septum separate the thigh into 3 compartments:
Anterior compartment = Quads + sartorius
Medial Compartment = Adductors + gracilis
    Posterior compartment = Hamstrings
