SV - what do you do in the ballot box?
there are two columns , one for your first choice candidate and one for your second. you put a cross next to your first choice candidate in the first column and one for your second choice candidate in the second column
SV - how many representatives do you get if the system was used in a general election?
You get one MP for each of the 650 constituencies
SV - how does the system convert votes into seats/how are the representatives chosen?
a candidate must achieve more than 50% of the vote
SV - what type of system is this?
majority system
SV - if 50% is not achieved in the first round, how does it ensure the winning candidate achieve 50% in the second round?
The top two candidates go through to the second round. All other candidates are eliminated.
SV - what type of government does this usually create?
strong one party government
SV - does the system encourage tactical voting and safe seats?
yes, but more conciliatory counselling for second preference
SV - what type of party system does this favour?
two party system
SV - in what elections is the system used?
it was used in the London mayoral elections until 2022. It is no longer used anywhere in the UK.
SV - what was the outcome of the london mayoral election in 2024 under FPTP and why was this different to the result in 2021?
Sadiq Khan still won with less of a turnout and less than 50% of the vote (43.8%)
