Free market capitalism

How does ThE world bank influence global econony?
Loans within a free market economy and promotes exports, and trade.
How does the IMF influence the global economy?
Assists in reforming economies and promotes open access for TNCs.
How does the WEF influence global economy?
Promotes globalisation and free trade through Davos meetings. (Elite and business together)
How does the WTO influence global economy?
Regulates trade and removes barriers.
But favours the rich
What has the dominance of TNCs in the global economy been caused by?
Scale - can out compete smaller companies and take them over.
Ability to borrow money to invest allowed advantage due to investing in new tech.
free trade opened new markets to expand.
What are the characteristics of global cultural influence? (5)
- freedom and rights
- importance of leisure (TV films)
- idea that wealth and goods can indicate success
- new tech and how it can solve problems
- small families rather than extended networks
Examples of non westernised cultural influence? (2)
- curry most popular food in UK (6x more curry take always than McDonald’s)
- sushi becoming more pop in the West from japan.
Examples of global action? (4)
- intervention in war and conflict (eg. Libya crisis)
- responding to terrorism (eg. War on terror)
- crisis response (eg. Ebola/Haiti earthquake)
- responding to longer term issues (climate change)
What does the UN Security Council do?
Maintains peace and security. -applies sanctions -authorises military action -authorises peace keeping However decisions can be vetoed by the permeant members.
Benefits of having allies? (3)
-act as the ‘eyes and ears’ in distant places.
-increase military assets.
-increase influence.
Military alliance (NATO, ANZUS)
What do both economic and military alliances create?
Interdependence
Economic requires geopolitical stability (wars are bad for trade)
What are the different attitudes of countries towards climate change? (4) (environmental governance)
- China is more focused on economic development.
- EU largest concern and willingness to act (Paris agreement)
- USA low concern (doubt climate change)
- high concern in Africa and Latin America, effected by emissions for rainfall for crop growth.
