‘The air was filed with phantoms, wandering hither and thither in restless haste’ Stave 1
air was filled - metaphor, desnsely packed, bustling silently and to the brim sith ignorant people
phantoms - noun, supernatural, ghosts, quite menacing and scary, haunting because they have had an unfulfilled life
wandering - verb, aimless, dazed, no true purpose/intention, something is amiss
hither and thither - phrase, further proves the verb wandering because something is amiss and they are bustling, no purpose
restless - adjective, purgatory, not a rewarding life after death, seeking out people and shows regret
haste - personification? noun? shows they are troubled, want to do something, need to help people quickly, however is futile, in vain, fruitless because they cannot do anything
‘chain… of cash-boxes, keys, padlocks, ledgers, deeds, and heavy purses wrought in steel’ Stave 1, Marley
chain - noun, heavy and a sign of imprisonment
list of sins he commited to others, he burdened them and now he is the one feeling the weight of all their burdens
wrought - is heavy and was forcefully beaten into shape, Marley was forced to see his actions and the consequences of it, causing him emotional turmoil
steel - noun, heavy, permanent, extremely difficult to break, truly imprisoned/trapped, cold metal that wont bend to the whims of Marley
DICKENS IS CRITICAL OF THE VICTORIAN ARISTOCRACY AND WEALTHY.
‘sprung a bright clear jet of light’ - Stave 2, Christmas Past
sprung - verb, quick and an an action filled with energy, childish and reference to spring (an event in the past)
bright clear jet - adjective phrase, list of three, bright and clear show the transparency and truthfulness of the past, in ohr memories the pst has a clear ending to it, jet is focused and centred beam of light, shows the GofCPast has intention and purpose
light - noun, gives us qualities and feelings of hope, truth, salvation, purity and overall goodness. GofCPast is a symbol of truth and innocence
‘an antique scabbard; but no sword was in it… the ancient sheath was eaten up with rust.’ - Stave 3
this shows that the GofCPresent is a symbol of Christmas Values and peace. he wishes goodwill to all men.
antique - adjective, old, for decoration, holds no true significance
no sword - negative, christmas is a time for peace not fighting, further proved by next personification
eaten up with rust - personification, time consumes menial things like fighting, mollifys conflict, the present should not be tainted with conflict, should be peaceful
‘The boy is ignorance…on his brow I see that is written which is Doom’ - Stave 3 Ignorance and Want.
ignorance - abstract noun, being unaware of the true unpleasant facts about this world, using it to solidify ignorant beliefs, not troubled by the weight of the situation because of purposeful, weaponised ignorance. context, Dickens targeted this book to the rich, who were ignorant and did nothing to help the poor, they were the ignorant ones and ACC was meant to make them take accountabilityand responsibility for their fellow people
Doom - noun, a place of suffering and hoplessness, death and destruction and tragic fate, christian belief of last judgement, doom will be certain for those who are ignorant and do not take responsibility for their peers. Dickens is. condemning the people who have the power to change lives yet are doing nothing
‘Its mysterious presence filled him with a solemn dread’ - Stave 4, GofCYTC
mysterious - adjective, shows the unkowns and uncertainty of the future, how it cannot be predicted or decoded
solemn - adjective, serious, his presence is imposing and scary, grave and sombre feelings; only certainty in the future is death, inevitable
dread - abstract noun, feels fear, apprehension, trepidation being near this ghost, he feels uneasy and is troubled, through his foreboding he knows that only negative thing will cone out of this
the fear of the ghost and his image of death promotes change within scrooge, he reveres the ghost because it is so scary and he fears what could be done to him
‘The spirits of all Three shall strive within me’ - Stave 4, Scrooge
this shows that scrooge has been changed under the influence of the lessons of the spirits, Scrooge bas changed and want to help the poor for a better future and is willing to uphold the values of christmas and social responsibility
strive - bold, brave, sounds challenging yet heroic, knows that the journey of helping will not be easy but he is prepared to do the best, he is ready to face the burdens of social responsibility
Purpose of the ghosts?
act as dickens mouthpiece and reveal mans sin through scrooge
they are terrifying yet wise and strive for the betterment of scrooge
dickens ultimately wanted the readers tk go on their own journey with the ghosts and see what they can do/ are capable of to help lthers
ghosts help convey dickens moral messages
past shows regret
present shows empathy and feel hardships and sorrow
future shows fear and uncertainty of future - this shiuld be taken into account and ultimately giving a purpose to be good rather than selfish
