devil - noun, witches referred to as demons, priorities are clear, he knows god and knows that these witches are the antithesis of god, right to doubt, like king james wary of witches
speak - verb, understands the power that words have, words have the power to tempt like they did in eden
true - noun, oxymoronic, devils are known for their lying and deceitful nature for their own selfish gain
question is in response to finding out that M has become Thane of Cawdor

instruments - noun, can be played, can be manipulated to create something macbeth wants to hear
darkness - noun, not to be trusted, unknown and holds danger like an abyss
tell us truths - questioning validity, if is trustworthy, aware this could be falsehoods by witches, doubtful and understands that witches & their deceitful nature use small, simpler truths in order to gain trust to deceive in important matters

A

macbeth remains conflicted even minutes away from duncans murder, he is questioning his sanity. the rate at which his mind is deteriorating shows shakespeares purpose in using the supernatural, receiving guidance from the supernatural is comprimising his ability to think rationally.
dagger - noun, smaller than a sword yet just as lethal, macbeth wields weapons in order to achieve his ambitions (power and recognition from duncan, becoming king)
mind, a false creation - noun, context, religious believe god was our conscience and in turning his back on god and receiving guidance from the supernatural, M and his mind are not trustworthy, deceiving him and further leading him astray from god
heat-oppressed - adjective, brain is under stress and pressure induced by his ambition/ potential supernatural interference, the murder if Duncan causes psychological turmoil so severe if manifests physically in M

never - imperative verb, forceful and final, macbeth believes his power as king makes him have power ovwr supernatural beings
banquo is shaking his head at macbeth, he disagrees witb him, even in death. he is a supernatural and unnatural being; but he still understands that macbeth is far more unnatural than him - macbeth is the unrightful king who commited regicide
gory locks - adjective and noun, bloody hair, reminder of banquos bloody and violent and graphic and disrespectful death

Purpose of Supernatural?

A

added to the play for extra scare factor/ accumulate fear and incite terror + made message of ‘going against natural order and king is wrong’ more effective
enhances the tragedy theme - people of the Jacobean Era knew not to trifle with supernatural
shows a cautionary tale for planning regicide and mingling with supernatural guidance
Witch of Endor - Biblical warning about the complications/implications of seeking out supernatural guidance and the downfall of a King
