Layer 2 of superficial plantar foot muscles
A
Quadratus plantae
Lumbrical
3
Q
Abductor hallucis
A
- Originates on the medial tubercle of the calcaneus
- Inserts on the base of the proximal phalanx of toe 1
- Abducts toe 1.
4
Q
Flexor digitorum brevis
A
- Originates on the medial tubercle of the calcaneus
- Inserts on the middle phalanges of toes 2—4; splits to allow passage of tendons of flexor digititorum.
- Flexes toes 2—4
5
Q
Abductor digiti minimi
A
- Originates on the medial and lateral tubercles of the calcaneus
- Inserts on the proximal phalanx of the 5th toe,
- Abducts toe 5.
6
Q
Quadratus plantae
A
- Originates on the medial and lateral sides of the calcaneus
- Inserts on the tendons of flexor digitorum longus
- Aids in toe flexion.
7
Q
Lumbrical
A
- Originate on the tendons of flexor digitorum longus
- Insert on the extensor expansions associated with the phalanges of toes 2—5.
• The lumbricals have two actions on digits 2—5:
– They flex the proximal phalanges, and, – They extend the middle and distal phalanges.
