Layer 4 muscles
Bipennate dorsal interossei
Unipennate plantar interossei
Flexor digiti minimi brevis
- Originates on the base of the fifth metatarsal
- Inserts on the base of the proximal phalanx of digit 5
- Flexes digit 5
Adductor hallucis - 2 heads
- The oblique head originates on the bases of metatarsals 2-4;
- The transverse head originates on the metatarsophalangeal joints of toes 2-5.
- Both heads insert on the proximal phalanx of the big toe.
- Adducts the big toe
Flexor hallucis brevis
- Originates on the cuboid and third cuneiform
- Insert on the proximal phalanx of the big toe.
- Flexes digit 1.
Bipennate dorsal interossei
• First dorsal interosseous arises from the sides of metatarsals I and II and inserts on the medial side of the proximal
phalanx of digit 2.
• Second dorsal interosseous arises from the sides of metatarsals II and III, and inserts on the lateral side of the
proximal phalanx of digit 2.
• Third dorsal interosseous arises from the sides of metatarsals III and IV and inserts on the lateral side of the proximal
phalanx of digit 3.
• The fourth dorsal interosseous arises from the sides of metatarsals IV and V, and inserts on the lateral side of the
proximal phalanx of digit 4.
• Dorsal interossei abduct the toes (in relation to digit 2).
Unipennate plantar inerossei
• All three plantar interossei arise from the medial sides of metatarsals III-V and insert on the medial sides of the
proximal phalanges of digits 3-5.
• Plantar interossei adduct the toes (in relation to digit 2).
