Main function
external rotators of thigh
List the muscles
- Gluteus Maximus
- Gluteus Medius
- Gluteus Minimus
- Tensor Fascia Latae
Gluteus Maximus: origin, insertion, innervation, function
Origin: space behind post. gluteal line Insertion: 70% - IT tract; 30% gluteal tuberosity Innervation: Inferior gluteal n. L5, S1, S2 Function: - stand from sitting - stairs + walking - rotate femur externally + abduct - extend + lock knee via IT tract

Origin: between anterior and posterior gluteal lines
Insertion: lateral + elongate facet of greater trochanter
Innervation: Superior gluteal n. L4, L5, S1
Function: main abductor thigh @ hip joint + med rotate thigh
Gluteus Minimus: origin, insertion, innervation, function
Origin: between anterior and inferior gluteal lines
Insertion: anterolateral + linear facet of greater trochanter
Innervation: Superior gluteal n. L4, L5, S1
Function: med rotate thigh + abductor thigh
Tensor Fascia Latae: origin, insertion, innervation
Origin: between ASIS and iliac tubercle
Insertion: IT tract
Innervation: Superior gluteal n. L4, L5, S1
Trendelenburg Sign
weak or paralysed abductors
- damage to sup. gluteal n. due to pelvic fracture or surgery
