Supercharger and turbcharging Flashcards
what is supercharging?
Increasing air/mixture density by increasing its pressure. Note in contrast to super- and turbocharging which differ from swirl, squish and tumble, as they conscentrate on mixing the fuel and air .
what is the difference between mechanical supercharging and supercharging?
In mechanical supercharging there is a seperate pump/blower /compressor that is driven from power from the engine itself
What is turbocharging?
a compressor and turbine on a single shaft —boosts the
inlet air/mixture density. The energy available in the exhaust stream drives the turbocharger turbine,
which drives the turbocharger compressor
-turbochargers are a type of supercharger.
Name some compressor types for supercharging
Positive displacement pumps:Roots(most normal), vane and screw compressor.
aerodynamic compressors:centrifugal pump
What is the advantage of running the output exhaust turbine with an adjustable nozzle for the turbomachine?
Can be adjusted to optimize efficiency depending on high or low rotational speed (I think this is called VVT)
Besides variables nozzles, what are some other turbocharging arrangements that can be used
Sequential turbocharging (use more then one turbocharger and turn the axess one on and of after need) and optimalize turbocharger for part load (waste gate and blow by??)
