Alternative fuels for ICEs Flashcards
What are some alternative fuels?
NG, biogas, biodiesel, alcohols(methanol/ethanol), Synthetic fuels, hydrogen, ammonia.
What are some advantages of natural gas?
No sulfur and no particulate matter, large reservs, same price as marine diesel oil, technology is ready, lower engine emissions
What is shale gas?
methane
Why do you cool LNG?
So that it can be stored at 1bar at reasonable energydensity
What is the advantage of running LNG cargo vessels on LNG?
In LNG tanks some gas evaopates. This increase the temperature. As this is not good (you want to keep temperature low), we use the evaporated gas in the engine as a fuel.
Why is methane not as good as it first look?
Methane slips
From an engine perspective, what are the disadvantages of LNG?
NG will not ignite under compressioneasily and need fuel rich mixture to ignite
How is LNG ignited in LNG motors?
Eather by duel injection with something else, by direct injection with very high pressure, but this demands very expensive motors or lean burn spark ignition gas engines. They are quite good but can not run on diesel, which is a handy backup fuel.
What is the main advantage of biodiesel
Dont need to change anything in the motor to operate on biodiesel.
What are to two most common biodiesels?
FAME(fatty acid methyl ester) and hydrated vegetable oil, which is the same as FAME but is broken and added in hydrogen.
Why is it hard storing hydrogen?
because of hydrogen-steel brittlement. Hydrogen flows in to steel and make it brittle
Why is ammonia called an hydrogen vector
because it can store hydrogen in a way that is more suitable for long time storage.
What is the advantage of methanol-efuel?
uses hydrogen and CO2 to create E-methanol. Disadvatage is that you release CO2. You also need CO2 when producing it. CO2 from where. I like this solution the most:)
