Summer Review- Video 2 Flashcards
What are random variables?
Random variables are variables that occur randomly or are chosen randomly.
Ex.
If you randomly chose people from a list, then their hair color, height weight, and any other data collected from them can be considered random variables.
What is the difference between quantitative and categorical variables?
Quantitative variables are numerically based measures that can be used to produce a numerical summary where as categorical data is data collected based on preferences, categories, or qualities. They can not produce numerical summaries (only mode).
What si the difference between quantitative and categorical data?
Quantitative= data in numbers
Ex. How many dogs do the people in my neighborhood own
0,0,0,01,2,3,4,3,2,2,1,0
Categorical= data in words
Ex. What pets do the people in my neighborhood have?
Bird,bird, none, cat, dog,dog,car, ca, cat, dog, dog , none, dog, none, none , none
What is the difference between discrete and continuous variables?
Discrete variable are variables that must be collected in whole numbers where as continuous variables can have values of all integer sand numbers between them
Ex.
Discrete (number of children): 1,2,3,4,5
Continuous(GPA): 2.4, 4.0, 4.6, 3.7, 3.2, 3.0
What is a quantitative variable?
Quantitative variables are numerical like: height, weight, days, age, gpa, score
What is a categorical variable?
Qualitative variables are like categories: hair color, music preferences, female, yes, no
What do we sometimes call categorical variables?
Qualitative variables
What is quantitative data?
The actual number collected form each subject.
NUMBERS
What is categorical data?
The actual individual category from a subject.
