- he attempted radical social reform introducing a law limiting the amount of land which any one individual could own, the resulting land was to be redistributed to the poor, thereby allowing them to serve in the army once again
- this was met with furious opposition from the senate, who’s farms were threatened
- when Tiberius stood for reeelection the following year, he was clubbed to death by senators

Gaius Gracchus

in 123 Tiberius’ younger brother was elected tribune
- he bought wide ranging reforms influcing: provincial administration and taxation, guarenteeing a subsided grain supply to poorer citizens, judicial reform and supporting his bro’s land reform
- again the senate vigorously opposed these and when he opposed extending Roman citizenship to Italian allies in 121 he was murdered

- removed property qualification for the army ( the rule that u had to own land to enter the army)
- the landless poor now came to rely on generals to recruit them and generals could now control and manipulate masses
- led him to be elected consul 7 times

build up to civil war

- in 91 tribune Lucius Drusus is killef for proposing as Gaius Gracchus had, that Rome’s Italian allies should be given citizenship
- the allies who provided so much manpower for Rome’s armies, now despaired and revolted
- this social war lasted until 89 when the Romans managed to overcome the allies and the senate decided to extend citizen rights

- commander of optimates in social war, fights well and after the war is given command against Mithradates (sent to kill him)
- The campaign looks rly easy as he is rich and foreign and bad at fighting (aka easy success)
- however Marius also wants to be given command against him

- sulla organises his army (of clients)
- Marius asks the tribune Sulpicious to give him the Mithridatic campaign, he does so through the people and removes the campaign from sulla, giving it to Marius
- sulla marches on rome and the first civil war in Roman history breaks out

- takes law courts back from the equites to the senate to raise its profile
