Sulfuric acid Flashcards
Fertilizer equation
2NH3 (aq) + H2SO4 (aq) ⇌ (NH4)2SO4 (aq)
Show that sulfuric acid is a diprotic acid with an equation
- H2SO4 (l) + H2O (l) ⇌ HSO4- (aq) + H3O+ (aq)
- Ka= 109 M
- HSO4- (aq) + H2O (l) ⇌ SO42- + H3O+ (aq)
- Ka= 1.0 x 10-2 M
Sulfuric acid as an oxidant
C (s) + 2H2SO4 (l) → CO2 (g) + 2H2O (l) + 2SO2 (g)
Sulfuric acid as a dehyrdating agent
C12H22O11(s) → (H2SO4) → 12C (s) + 11H2O (g)
Acid rain
SO2 (g) + H2O (l) → H2SO4 (aq)
Contact Process: Stage 1
Furnace
Molten sulfur sprayed into furnace, reacts with dry air to produce sulfer dioxide. The air is then purified and cooled
- S (l) + O2 (g) → SO2 (g)
Contact Process: Stage 2
Converter
Sulfur dioxide oxidised to form sulfur trioxide
Reaction is reversible
Vanadium (V) oxide (V2O5) used as catalyst to maximise product, allows work to be done aat slightly lower temp (400 degrees)
450 degrees
- 2SO2(g) + O2(g) ⇌ 2SO3(g)
Contact process: Stage 3
Absorption tower
Sulfur trioxide formed to oleum, then into sulfuric acid
SO3(g) + H2SO4(aq) → H2S2O7 (l)
Dilute to standard
H2S2O7 (l) + H2O (l) ⇌ 2H2SO4 (l)
