General reaction types Flashcards
Combustion (burning) reactions of elements
Element + Oxygen –> Elemental oxide
Combustion of hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbon + Oxygen –> Carbon dioxide + water
Heating metal carbonates
Metal hydrogen carbonate –> metal carbonate + CO2
Heating metal hyrogen carbonates (bicarbonates)
Metal hydrogen carbonate –> Metal carbonate + water +CO2
Neutralisation reactions (acid/base)
Acid + hydroxide –> salt + water
Acid & metal
Acid + metal –> salt + hydrogen
Reactive Metal (K, Na, Ca and Li) & water
Reactive metal + water –> Metal hydroxide + hydrogen
Acid & metal carbonate reactions
Acid + metal carbonate –> salt + water + carbon dioxide
Acid & metal hydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate)
Acid + metal carbonate -> salt + water + carbon dioxide
Acid & metal oxide
Acid + metal oxide –> salt + water
Acid and metal sulpihde
Acid + metal sulphide –> salt + hydrogen sulphide gas (H2S (g))
Metal replacement reactions (single replacement reactions)
A + BC –> B + AC
Where A and B are metals and C is an anion. Metal A is more reactive than Metal B
Precipitation reactions (Double replacement reactions)
Solutions of soluble ionic salts are mixed and an insoluble precipitate is prduced
E.g: AgNO3 (aq) + NaCl (aq) –> AgCl (s) +NaNO3 (aq)
