sugar and lipid Flashcards
Hemiacetal
The functional group formed when an alcohol and aldehyde functional group combine. It contains a tetrahedral carbon bonded to −OH
and −OR
Amphipathic
they have a side that is polar (head), and another side that’s not polar (tail).
diastereomer
A stereoisomer that is not a mirror image. Diastereomers exist for molecules with more than one chiral center.
esterification
A condensation reaction of a carboxylic acid and an alcohol to form an ester.
Enantiomers
Compounds containing at least one chiral center that are nonsuperimposable mirror images.
hydrolysis
A decomposition reaction involving the breaking of one large organic molecule into two smaller molecules. H2O is also a reactant. The reverse reaction is condensation.
Chiral
Carbon attach to four different groups
