National Union of Women’s Suffrage society set up and led by Millicent Fawcett. Group of SUFFRAGISTS (peaceful and included men)
1903
WOMEN’S SOCIAL & POLITICAL UNION (WSPU). Formed by the Pankhursts (Emmeline Sylvia and Christabel). Used violence and were often arrested. Had motto ‘Deeds not Words’ : arson and letter boxes, smashed windows and held processions with banners “votes for women”. By 1909 the magazine sold 20,000+ magazines
What did they want
Equal political power to men, to change law on education marriage freedom and rights over property and children
Prisons
Women often went on hunger strike and were force fed. The 1913 cat and mouse act allowed women to leave risen when they were so weakened they were at risk of dying
