What is established when a coroner conducts an inquest?
The fact the person has died (deceased person certificate)
The identity of the deceased
The cause of death
Where and when the death occurred
Circumstances of the death
What deaths must be reported?
SCUMBIE
S - Suicide
C - Cause unknown or no doctors certificate issued.
U - Unnatural or violent death
M - Medical or surgical or dental operation or procedure
B - Birth deaths, or deaths from pregnancy
I - Institutional deaths: deaths in a psychiatric hospital, prison, or while in police custody
E - Enactment requires the holding of an inquest
When must the coroner hold an inquiry?
SIC

C - Circumstances of death have not been clearly established
