what is the purpose of suctioning?
A
- maintain open airway
- obtain specimen for dx
- improv aire xchange (vent/perfusion)
- promote airway clearance
- prevent infection
- comfort

when is orophareangeal suction used?
A
to improve oxygenation by removing mucous and forering mat from mouth and throat
pt who have excessive drooling, CVA, impaired cough reflex, impaire swallowing

how do you measure a nasopharyngeal and a nasotracheal tube?
A
nasopharyngeal: tip of patient’s ear to tip of nose
nasotracheal : tip of nose, to ear to larynx

what are indications for suctioning?
A
- Audible / visible signs of excessive secretions within tube (artificial airway)
- Signs of respiratory distress
- Inability to expectorate secretions through coughing
- Sample required for diagnostic testing
- (Increased respirations, drooling, coughing, choking, cyanosis, dyspnea, audible signs)
