A

to improve oxygenation by removing mucous and forering mat from mouth and throat

pt who have excessive drooling, CVA, impaired cough reflex, impaire swallowing

how do you measure a nasopharyngeal and a nasotracheal tube?

A

nasopharyngeal: tip of patient’s ear to tip of nose

nasotracheal : tip of nose, to ear to larynx

what are indications for suctioning?

A
  • Audible / visible signs of excessive secretions within tube (artificial airway)
  • Signs of respiratory distress
  • Inability to expectorate secretions through coughing
  • Sample required for diagnostic testing
  • (Increased respirations, drooling, coughing, choking, cyanosis, dyspnea, audible signs)
