what are the 3 analgesic groups? examples of each?
1) non-opiods (acetaminophen, ASA (advil), NSAID (naproxen)
2) opioids (dialudid, morphine, fentanyl codeine)
3) adjuvants (corticosteroids, TCA, anticonvulsant, local anesthetic
- Can give bcz each meds attacks the pain from diff
pathways
why is demerol no longer given (opioid)?
high risk of neurotoxicity (seizures)
what are adjunctive anesthetic drugs? use?
drugs that are administered in addition to general anesthesia
such as:
1) anticholinergics
2) msk relaxant
3) benzodiazepine
4) opioids
how is the WHO ladder for pain meds organized?
mild pain= non opioid +/- adjuvant
moderate pain= opioids for mild to moderate pain +/- non opioids +/- adjuvant
severe pain= opioid for moderate to severe pain +/- non opioids +/- adjuvant
