What is the purpose of suctioning?
To promote airway patency.
Nursing Consideratons
1) auscultate for breath sounds - CRACKLES
2) Position:
• Unconscious: SL
• Conscious: SF
3) Size of Catheter:
Adult: FR 12 - 18
Child: FR 8 - 10
Infant: 5 - 8
4) Pressure
Wall Unit ⬆️
Infant: 50 - 95 mmhg
Child: 95 - 100 mmhg
Adult: 100 - 120 mmhg
Portable Unit ⬇️
Infant: 2 - 5 mmhg
Child: 5 - 10 mmhg
Adult: 10 - 15 mmhg
5) Hyper-oxygenate 100%
6) Wear: STERILE GLOVES
7) Lubricant:
a) Nasopharyngeal: H20 based
b) PNSS - prevent cell irritation & fluid shifting
8) Length of Insertion: nose ➡️ earlobe 5 inches (12 - 15 cm) 9) Introduce suction catheter without suction 10) Time a) N: 5 - 10 secs (ideal) / 10 - 15 secs b) Interval: 20 - 30 secs c) Maximum: 3 - 5 mins
- prevent HYPOXIA & HYPOXEMIA
11) withdraw suction catheter w/ circulating & rotating motion - to prevent drainage mucus membrane
12) ORAL CARE
13) before & after: hyper-oxygenate
14) Auscultate breath sounds: BRONCHOVESICULAR BS
- AUSCULTATE FOR:

b) Oropharyngeal: PNSS (isotonic sol’n) - prevents cell irritation & fluid shifting
8) Length of Insertion
nose ➡️ earlobe (5 inches)
9) Introduce suction catheter without suction
10) Time
a) N: 5 - 10 secs (ideal) / 10 - 15 secs
b) Interval: 20-30 secs
c) Maximum: 3 - 5 mins
to prevent hypoxia / hypoxemia

Gently withdraw catheter in circular & rotating motion to prevent drainage of mucus membrae
12) Perform:
ORAL CARE
