Oxygen (O2) Therapy Flashcards
What is the purpose of O2 therapy?
It is done to improve tissue oxygenation.
CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)
acid by nature; waste product of the body; important inside the body
What is the stimulus for breathing?
CO2: Hypoxic Drive
MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS
a) Dry gas
- ) moistening of the gas - humidify this gas with sterile water
- ) perform: ORAL CARE
- ) lubricant: WATER BASED
b) supports COMBUSTION
- ) place: NO SMOKING SIGN
- ) check: ELECTRICAL DEVICES
- ) use: COTTON FABRIC
- ❌ wool or silk - can cause static electricty!
c) Colorless - prone to leakage!
Methods of O2 Delivery
- Nasal Cannula
- Simple Face Mask
- Non-rebreather
- Venturi Mask
NASAL CANNULA
- 24 - 40%
- AKA “nasal prongs”
- commonly used
SIMPLE FACE MASK
- 40 - 60%
- both mouth & nose
NON-REBREATHER
- 100%
- highest possible amount of O2 delivery
ANTIDOTE FOR OXYGEN TOXICITY
Carbon Monoxide
VENTURI MASK
- 24 - 40%
- most accurate
❗️BEST USE FOR COPD PT!
Nursing Considerations
1.) Assess for hypoxia
• Early Signs: restless, ⬆️ RR, HR, BP
• Late Signs: cyanosis, ⬇️ RR, HR, BOP
- ) Verify doctor’s orders
a) 2 - 3 LPM: independent intervention
b) ⬆️3: dependent
3.) Position: FOWLER’s - for lung expansion
- ) Regulate O2 flow accurately
- O2 can cause blindness
Oxygen Toxicity can lead to?
BLINDNESS ✨RETROLENTAL FIBROPLASIA✨
- retinal damage leading to irreversible blindness as a result of excessive O2 administration
