MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS

A

a) Dry gas

  1. ) moistening of the gas - humidify this gas with sterile water
  2. ) perform: ORAL CARE
  3. ) lubricant: WATER BASED

b) supports COMBUSTION

  1. ) place: NO SMOKING SIGN
  2. ) check: ELECTRICAL DEVICES
  3. ) use: COTTON FABRIC
    - ❌ wool or silk - can cause static electricty!

c) Colorless - prone to leakage!

Q

Nursing Considerations

A

1.) Assess for hypoxia
• Early Signs: restless, ⬆️ RR, HR, BP
• Late Signs: cyanosis, ⬇️ RR, HR, BOP

  1. ) Verify doctor’s orders
    a) 2 - 3 LPM: independent intervention
    b) ⬆️3: dependent

3.) Position: FOWLER’s - for lung expansion

  1. ) Regulate O2 flow accurately
    - O2 can cause blindness
