What are examples of successes and failures of the Commsion for Refugees?
Successes:
1921 - Helped free around 427,000 out of 500,000 prisoners of war from the First World War.
1917 - 1.5 million people fled to Russia to refugee camps and helped them find homes.
1922 - Turkey clashed with Greece and the violence forced people to flee refugee camps. The League of Nations set up doctors to help treat diseases such as cholera and small pox.
Failures:
1933 - Germany rejected the proposal to appoint a High Commisioner for refugees. A commisioner was appointed, but with less power.

Aims: regulated transport developed during the war to keep people safe.
Successes:
Introduced shipping lanes which prevented collisions.
Produced an international highway code which meant that car drivers followed the same traffic rules.

Introduced a system where companies had to have a certificate to say they were allowed to import opium for medicinal purposes.

Failures:

Aims: to improve working conditions.
Successes:
1922 - Recommended banning the use of white lead in paint as it is poisonous.
1930 - Helped Greece set up social insurance.
1928 - 77 countries agreed to set a minimum wage.
Challenged bad working conditions on railways, reducing deaths of slaves to 4%.
Failures:
1919 - Attempted stopping children under 14 from working. This was denied at it would have cost too much.
1935 - Suggested working day to be limited. This was denied as it would have cost too most and was described as “industrial suicide”.

Sent financial experts to help Austria and Hungary to not go bankrupt after losing the war.

Failures:
Commsion was unable to cope after the global depression in 1929.

Started an international campaign of mosquitoes, stopping the spread of malaria and yellow fever.
Organised an education program, teaching people about the disease typhus and how it was spread.
