Substances Flashcards
How does distillation purify substances?
It separates substances based on their different boiling points
Elements contain only one type of _____?
Atom
A compound is made up of _____?
Two or more elements chemically combined.
Do compounds have the same or different properties to the elements they’re made up of?
They have different properties.
Name these compounds
a) NaOH
b) PbO2
c) H2O
d) HCl
e) OH
f) NaCl
a) sodium oxide
b) lead oxide
c) water
d) hydrochloric acid
e) hydroxide
f) sodium chloride
What side of the periodic table are metals on?
They’re on the left side
What side of the periodic table are non metals on?
They’re on the right
What are the properties of metals?
They’re usually solids, have high melting points, shiny, high density, hard and strong, conduct heat and electricity, malleable, oxides are bases.
What are the properties of non metals?
All states of matter, low melting point, low density, brittle, oxides are acid, not malleable
What are oxides?
Oxides are when a metal or non metal reacts with oxygen.
Rule 1
When two different elements combine, the ending of the end product is usually something ‘ide’
Rule 2
When 3 or more different elements combine - and one of them is oxygen - the ending of the end product will usually be something ‘ate’
Chemical change
Can’t be reversed
Physical change
Can be reversed
