Substance Use Disorder Flashcards
a problematic pattern of using alcohol or another substance that results in impairment in daily life or noticeable distress
Substance Use Disorder or SUD
The test used to determine severity of SUD. An individual meet at least 2 criteria within a 12 month period to be diagnosed with an SUD.
DAST-10
a reversible, substance-specific syndrome as a result of the recent ingestion of a substance; must include maladaptive behavior or psychological changes and
specific signs of the substance’s effects on the nervous system
Substance Intoxication
A substance-specific maladaptive behavioral change with physiological and cognitive correlates, due to cessation or reduction of heavy or prolonged substance use
Substance Withdrawal
What are the signs of alcohol intoxication?
inappropriate sexual or aggressive behaviors; impaired judgment; slurred
speech; emotional lability; incoordination; unsteady gait; involuntary, rhythmic movement of the
eyes; impaired attention or memory; stupor; coma
What are signs of alcohol withdrawal?
sweating; tachycardia; hand tremor; insomnia; nausea or vomiting; transient illusions or hallucinations; anxiety; psychomotor agitation; grand mal seizures; delirium
tremens (DT’s).
What two syndromes are related to brain damage and vitamin B-1 deficiency?
Wernicke-Encephalopathy and Wernicke-Korsakoff
a chronic memory disorder caused by severe deficiency of
thiamine (vitamin B-1)
Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome
an acute, life threatening (but reversible) condition that requires emergency treatment. It results from severe acute deficiency of thiamin
Wernicke-Encephalopathy
Symptoms of Wernicke-Encephalopathy
symptoms may include confusion, loss of muscle coordination (leg tremors), and vision changes (abnormal
eye movements, double vision, eyelid drooping)
Symptoms of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome
Symptoms may include hallucinations and personality changes
Signs of Intoxication for Cocaine and Amphetamines
euphoria; anxiety; hyperactivity; grandiosity; confusion; anger; paranoia; auditory hallucinations; tachycardia; elevated or lowered blood pressure; dilated pupils;
perspiration or chills; nausea or vomiting; weight loss; psychomotor agitation; muscular weakness; confusion; seizures
Signs of Withdrawal for cocaine/amphetamines
dysphoric mood; fatigue; vivid and unpleasant dreams; insomnia or hypersomnia; increased appetite; psychomotor agitation or retardation
impaired motor coordination; euphoria; anxiety; sensation of slowed time; impaired judgment; social withdrawal; conjunctival injection (redness of the eyes); increased
appetite; dry mouth; tachycardia.
Caffeine intoxication
irritability; anger or aggression; nervousness or anxiety; sleep difficulty (insomnia); decreased appetite or weight loss; restlessness; depressed mood; stomach pain; shakiness/tremors; sweating; fever, chills, and/or headache.
Caffeine Withdrawal
What substance intoxication/withdrawals cause Tachycardia (increased heartrate)?
Amphetamine, cocaine, caffeine intoxication, Cannabis Intoxication, Hallucinogens Intoxication
What Substances intoxication/Withdrawals cause hallucinations?
Alcohol withdrawals, Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, Amphetamine/Cocaine Intoxication, Hallucinogens
What substances call mood changes like anxiety?
Cocaine/Amphetamine intoxication, Caffeine (nervousness) Cannabis withdrawal, Hallucinogens
initial euphoria followed by apathy or dysphoria; pupillary constriction; drowsiness or coma; slurred speech; impairment in attention and memory
Opioid Intoxication
dysphoric mood; nausea or vomiting; muscle aches; lacrimation or rhinorrhea (runny eyes & nose); pupillary dilation; diarrhea; yawning; fever; insomnia.
Opioid Withdrawal
impaired motor coordination; euphoria; anxiety; sensation of slowed time; impaired judgment; social withdrawal; conjunctival injection (redness of the eyes); increased
appetite; dry mouth; tachycardia
Cannabis Intoxication
irritability; anger or aggression; nervousness or anxiety; sleep difficulty
(insomnia); decreased appetite or weight loss; restlessness; depressed mood; stomach pain; in shakiness/tremors; sweating; fever, chills, and/or headache.
Cannabis Withdrawal
Opioids intoxication
initial euphoria followed by apathy or dysphoria; pupillary constriction; drowsiness or coma; slurred speech; impairment in attention and memory.
Opioid Withdrawals
dysphoric mood; nausea or vomiting; muscle aches; lacrimation orrhinorrhea (runny eyes & nose); pupillary dilation; diarrhea; yawning; fever; insomnia
Not meeting SUD criteria for 3 or more consecutive months, but less than 12 months
Early Full Remission
Not meeting SUD criteria for 12 or longer months.
Sustained Full Remission
SUD Interventions
Naltrexone, Disulfiram (Antabuse), and Acamprosate are the most common drugs
used for Alcohol
Methadone, Naltrexone, and Buprenorphine can be used for opioids.
Motivational Interviewing is a clinical intervention used for substance use disorders.
It is caused by severe alcohol abuse
Wernicke’s Encephalopathy
Signs of intoxication with ________ include initial euphoria, drowsiness, and impairment in attention and memory.
Opioid intoxication
___________ is a symptom of a substance use disorder.
Tolerance
Signs of withdrawal with _____________ include fatigue, vivid and unpleasant dreams, and increased appetite
amphetamines/cocaine
Gastrointestinal disturbance, muscle twitches, and flushed face are all signs of
caffeine intoxication.
Grand mal seizures are associated with withdrawal from
Alcohol
It is used to treat Heroin/Opioid addiction.
Methadone maintenance
____________,which are highly addictive, are commonly abused to self medicate for
PTSD
Opioids
Impaired motor coordination, euphoria, anxiety and sensation of slowed time are
signs of
Cannabis Intoxication
One of the main symptoms of Korsakoff’s Syndrome is
amnesia.
