Define substance misuse
harmful/hazardous use of psychoactive substances
What are the main types of substances people misuse?
Stimulants = tobacco cocaine amphetamine
hallucinogens = LSD magic mushrooms
depressants = alcohol heroin cannabis
Define compliance
The extent to which the patient’s behaviour matches the prescriber’s recommendations
Define concordance
negotiation between patient/doctor over treatment regimes, in which patients beliefs and priorities are respected, the patient is active, and can make decisions in partnership with doctor
Define adherence
The extent to which the patient’s behaviour matches agreed recommendations from the prescriber
Describe the factors that influence adherence
Education, beliefs, health, finances
Define intentional non-adherence
patient decides not to follow the treatment recommendations = beliefs/preferences that influence person’s perceptions of treatment and motivation to start/continue
Define unintentional non-adherence
patient wants to follow the agreed treatment but is prevented from doing so by barriers that are beyond their control
= poor recall or difficulties in understanding the instructions, problems with using the treatment, inability to pay for the treatment, or simply forgetting to take it
