Dependancy & Treatment Flashcards
What are the different treatment models?
Medication model, disease model, behavioural model
What is the medical model of treatment?
Assumption that the abnormal behaviour is the result of physical problem therefore focus is on the physical condition = tolerance, physical withdrawal, symptoms, vit def. e.g. Detox, substitute prescribing
What is the disease model of treatment?
Describes an addiction as a disease with biological, neurological, genetic and environmental sources of origin = abstinence is the only viable treatment. E.g. AA 12 step programme
What is the behavioural model of treatment?
States addiction doesn’t exist, excessive use is merely a mid-learnt coping-mechanism = alternative coping mechanisms can be taught; past experiences addressed. E.g. CBT
What are the top 5 treatment methods for addiction?
Brief interventions,
motivational interviewing,
acamprosate,
relapse prevention,
naltrexone
How is addiction managed if the individual doesn’t want to change?
Harm reduction = vit B for alcoholics, needle exchange, sexual health, blood borne virus (BBV) screening
How is addiction managed if the individual doesn’t want to stop taking drugs?
Substitute prescribing: opiates = methadone, amphetamine = dexamphetamine
Define the mechanism of physical dependence
physical condition caused by chronic use of atoleranceforming drug, in which abrupt or gradualdrug withdrawalcauses unpleasant physical symptoms (e.g., fatigue anddelirium tremens)
Define the mechanism of psychological dependance
mediated through-ve reinforcement, involves a desire to use a drug or perform a behaviour to avoid the unpleasant withdrawal syndrome that results from cessation of exposure to it. (e.g dysphoria andanhedonia)
Define tolerance
diminishing effect of a drug resulting from repeated administration at a given dose
Define withdrawal
symptoms that occur upon cessation of repeated drug use
Outline addictive behaviour
behaviour that is both rewarding and reinforcing
