Note that in Psychiatry, sleep is one of the few “markers” we have. There are characteristic sleep patterns that correlate with certain diagnoses.
: Shortened REM latency; early AM awakening, fitful sleep. Hypersomnia also possible in mood disorders.

: Drastically decreased need for sleep. Highly irritable. Manic episode can be precipitated by sleep deprivation (jet travel).

Patient often is up all night, in agitated aimless activity, driven by delusional thinking.
